History[]

Initially repainted in Free French Air Force insignia, 550062 was flown to Farnborough eight days after it's capture by Wg Cdr Ronald J Flak, the RAE's Chief Test Pilot and Operations Administrator,[1] the journey taking 2hrs 45mins.[2]

Prior to flight testing, the French insignia had been replaced by RAF roundels and D-Day stripes, and the aircraft was allocated serial number TS439.[3]

Tested by Captain Eric Melrose 'Winkle' Brown on 20, 21 and 22 September, TS439 was regularly flown at Farnborough until November 1944, and then infrequently until it was delivered to Boscombe Down on 20 February 1945. This aircraft was reportadly shipped to the USA.[4]

A photograph of this aircraft in flight, wearing RAF markings, was included in the obituary for Captain Brown, published in the April 2016 edition of Aeroplane Monthly.[5]

Trivia[]
